Tested: 2023 GL600 Maybach is a bouncing luxury resort on wheels

The 10 Second Review

Maybach vehicles share their foundations with regular Mercedes-Benz models, but models such as the 2023 Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 exude an unmistakable aura of exclusivity. Beneath the hood, there lies a silky twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine generating 550 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque, while the default air suspension provides an exceptionally smooth ride. This opulence extends to the interior, where the rear seats and interior details are so luxuriously appointed that they could easily belong in a top-tier hotel suite.

The In-Depth Review

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Tested: 2023 GL600 Maybach is a bouncing luxury resort on wheels

The GLS600 is not just a luxury SUV; it’s a luxury hotel on wheels. This vehicle was crafted to indulge its passengers, and it excels in this regard.

The GLS600’s twin-turbocharged V-8 produces 550 hp and accelerates the large luxury SUV from 0 to 60 km/h in 4.7 seconds, per Mercedes-Maybach. It benefits from a 48-volt hybrid system for added initial power. We were impressed by its smooth ride and confident handling. It comes with standard air suspension, including a Maybach mode that smooths road imperfections.

However, it’s important to note that this impressive power and performance come at a trade-off in terms of fuel efficiency. The V12 engine’s thirst for fuel might not make it the most eco-friendly option, but it undoubtedly delivers on the promise of luxury and performance expected from a Maybach.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The standard Benz-branded GLS-class SUV features three rows, but the Maybach GLS600 opts for only two rows, each equipped with heated and massaging functions. The rear seats are the highlight, offering an abundance of legroom and two power-adjustable recliner seats that provide a first-class airline cabin-like experience.

While a three-person bench is available, the true essence of this SUV lies in the luxurious treatment. Premium Nappa leather covers the dashboard, door panels, and seats, complemented by genuine wood trim featuring an attractive pinstripe for added elegance. To create a sensory haven, there’s a fragrance diffuser to cater to occupants after a day of opulence.

However, the cargo capacity is more limited compared to the standard GLS-class since the rear seats are fixed and cannot be folded to accommodate larger items. Mercedes-Maybach still offers around 19 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and provides a set of well-fitted custom luggage.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Twin 12.3-inch infotainment screens incorporate Mercedes-Benz’s most up-to-date MBUX software interface. Rear-seat occupants have access to two 11.6-inch displays for watching movies or managing the audio system. Additionally, there’s the option of a remarkable Burmester sound system equipped with an impressive array of 27 speakers.
