Tested: 2023 Maserati Grecale Trofeo a 523HP Super SUV in need of anger management

The 10 Second Review

I’ve always hoped that Maserati would once again produce impressive cars, and it appears that this hope is finally becoming a reality! Similar to other Trofeo models, the Grecale places a strong emphasis on its drivetrain, and it excels in this regard. The standout feature is a slightly toned-down version of the Nettuno V6 engine, which originally debuted in the MC20 supercar and enables the vehicle to reach 100 kilometers per hour in just 3.6 seconds.

The Grecale offers exceptional comfort when driving in comfort or GT mode, but it noticeably tightens up in the Sport and Corsa modes, making it surprisingly capable for tackling winding roads.

The In-Depth Review

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Grecale Trofeo derives its power from a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine, sourced from the MC20 sports car but tuned down to produce 523 horsepower, sufficient to accelerate the SUV from zero to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. Managing the gear changes is an eight-speed automatic transmission, effectively channeling all that horsepower to the Grecale Trofeo’s all-wheel-drive system. Additionally, the Trofeo model includes adaptive dampers and an air suspension as standard, with the latter being adjustable according to driving requirements.

The performance is incredible and on par with several of its rivals, which is to say it’s f****** quick; but I’d suggest that’s not the only reason some buyers will appreciate Maserati’s offering over more established high-performance nameplates.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The interior design of the Grecale Trofeo exudes elegance and incorporates several high-tech elements. Alongside the use of premium materials throughout the cabin, the dashboard features a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a pair of touchscreens located on the center stack. The upper screen, measuring 12.3 inches, is responsible for managing the infotainment system, while the lower 8.8-inch screen houses controls for HVAC and other functions. A three-zone climate system comes as a standard feature. Passengers should find ample space for comfort, provided those in the rear seats aren’t exceptionally tall or seated three-across. In terms of cargo capacity, the Grecale Trofeo offers up to 20 cubic feet of space, and Maserati notes that the area behind the power-folding rear seats has a flat load floor with an additional storage compartment beneath it.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Similar to the standard Grecale, the Grecale Trofeo is equipped with Maserati’s latest infotainment system, which is based on Google technology and operates on a 12.3-inch touchscreen. An additional 8.8-inch touchscreen can be found below the main one on the dashboard, controlling various other functions. Every model includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and there’s also a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. For audio enthusiasts, Maserati has collaborated with Sonus Faber for the Grecale Trofeo’s sound system, which comes with 14 speakers as a standard setup and can be upgraded to an even more potent 21-speaker configuration.
