Although the Volkswagen Touareg may not be the most dynamically sharp vehicle in its category, it still stands out as a fantastic all-around option. By opting for a selection of proven and reliable V6 engines, it retains its position as one of the most robust and sophisticated cars available. In early 2019, a 335bhp V6 petrol variant was introduced, weighing 50kg less than its diesel counterparts. This model accomplishes the 0-100km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 235 km/h.
When cruising on the highway, the engine feels relatively relaxed. It delivers ample power both from a standstill and during acceleration. Moreover, it operates remarkably quietly, even at higher RPMs. All engine options come paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and the 4MOTION four-wheel-drive system is standard across the entire range.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Inside the cabin, the Touareg establishes an impressive standard with its user-friendly design and premium materials. Beyond its appealing aesthetics, the interior is loaded with practical features and thoughtful details. Leather abounds, complemented by generous use of metal and top-notch plastic components. VW dubs its most sophisticated display option the ‘Innovision Cockpit,’ and it comes standard on R-Line Tech, Black Edition, and R models. This setup includes a pair of 12.3-inch digital dials positioned alongside a sizable 15-inch central infotainment screen. Despite the subtle division just behind the steering wheel, creating the illusion of a single pane of glass, VW explains that this is done solely to reduce replacement costs in case of damage.
The menu system is customizable in a tile formation, allowing users to prioritize frequently used functions and push less essential ones to the background. It’s an exceptionally intuitive configuration, seamlessly integrating with the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems.
