Toyota is making the their much awaited Prado in China.

Just last month, the iconic Ford Bronco, one of the pioneers in the world of SUVs, took a big step by applying for a sales permit in China. This move marked one of the final stages before the legendary vehicle officially begins production in China. Now, in a surprising twist, another automotive legend, the Toyota Prado, is set to join the party.

Based on teasers circulating on Chinese social media, Toyota’s collaboration with First Auto Works (FAW) is gearing up to manufacture the Prado in the Chengdu factory starting next year. What’s particularly intriguing is that the Made-in-China (MIC) version may offer a retro option with rounded headlights, adding a touch of nostalgia to this classic.

However, from the teaser images, it appears that the future MIC Prado might provide buyers with a choice between two headlight styles – square and round. In terms of size, the domestic version of the model retains its dimensions, with a chassis measuring 4920/1980/1860 mm and riding on a 2850 mm wheelbase.

Both the exterior and interior design of the MIC Prado will stay true to the overseas version. The feature set includes external power supply, multi-terrain monitor, wireless charging, digital key, heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a premium JBL speaker system with 14 amplifiers, among other amenities.

Under the hood, the future MIC model will boast a hybrid powertrain comprising a 2.4T turbocharged engine and an electric motor, delivering a combined maximum power of 243 kW (330 hp) and a maximum torque of 630 Nm. The transmission system will feature an 8-speed manual gearbox.

When it comes to off-road capabilities, the Prado doesn’t disappoint. It comes equipped with a Torsen limited-slip center differential, lockable center differential, electronically controlled mechanical rear axle differential, and a range of terrain control features, including a crawl mode. The vehicle offers a maximum approach angle of 31°, a maximum departure angle of 22°, and a ground clearance of 221 mm.

Known as the Toyota Prado or the Toyota Land Cruiser in some markets, this SUV boasts a robust ladder frame chassis, two-speed transfer boxes, and rear beam axles. Depending on the platform, it may feature front independent suspension or a front beam axle. As of 2023, the Prado is available in nearly every Toyota market except Mexico, South Korea, and select Southeast Asian and South American markets.
