The Tesla Model Y gets some delightful upgrades

The Tesla Model Y

Tesla has introduced a series of updates to the Tesla Model Y, focusing on its performance, comfort, and technology while refining its design. We counted over 50 improvements and think we can group them into five categories:

1. Efficiency and Aerodynamics

The updated Tesla Model Y achieves a drag coefficient of 0.22 (down from 0.23), making it 4% more aerodynamic than its predecessor. This improvement, combined with updated powertrain gearing and reduced frictional losses from optimized lubrication, contributes to a 2.8% increase in range for the Long Range AWD trim, now offering 320 miles. The glass roof features a silver coating for 7x better heat refraction, which reduces HVAC system load and improves overall energy efficiency. Additionally, the new wheel designs further enhance battery performance, while a slight reduction in ground clearance (by 0.2 inches) contributes to its sleeker profile.

2. Comfort and Ride Quality

Tesla has significantly enhanced the Model Y’s ride comfort and noise insulation. The updated suspension system provides a softer ride, while vibration on rough roads has been reduced by 51%. Noise reduction has been a key focus, with a 22% decrease in road noise, 20% less wind noise, and acoustic double-pane glass now covering all windows for a quieter cabin. Interior comfort has also been improved, with extended rear seat cushions, wider headrests, and ventilated and heated front seats, making the Model Y a more enjoyable space for all passengers.

3. Interior Design and Technology

The Tesla Model Y’s interior has been reimagined with a focus on luxury and functionality. The cabin now features softer fabrics, double-stitched dash materials, and multicolor ambient LED lighting extending to the rear doors. The center console has been updated with a more premium finish, while the main 15.4-inch center touchscreen is brighter, more responsive, and has slimmer bezels. Rear passengers also benefit from an 8-inch touchscreen for controlling climate and entertainment. Connectivity has been vastly improved, with better Bluetooth, 50% stronger cellular reception, and dual-band Wi-Fi with double the range.

4. Safety and Practicality

Safety enhancements include a new front bumper camera with a sprayer for debris removal, improved braking performance for better energy recapture, and a redesigned seatbelt pickup point to accommodate a wider range of body sizes. Door impact protection has been bolstered with a new bottom latch, and the rear tail light bar now features a unique indirect reflective design. Practical updates include faster power-folding rear seats, automatically adjusting front seats to prevent headrest clashes when folding, and a drain hole in the frunk for added convenience.

5. Exterior and Aesthetic Refinements

Tesla has introduced several design refinements that enhance the Tesla Model Y’s sleek and futuristic look. The car is now 1.6 inches longer, with a squared-off rear trunk glass shape and a slimmer front light bar that incorporates headlights underneath. The iconic rear Tesla logo has been replaced with “TESLA” lettering for a minimalist aesthetic. Inside, the new steering wheel features integrated controls for lights, horn, camera, and mic, while the gear stalk has been eliminated, with drive modes now controlled via the touchscreen.

Although an official timeline or pricing for the UAE has not yet been announced, the estimated price in the U.S. is expected to be around $62,000.
