Tested: 2023 EQE Mercedes! is it better than an E Class?

The 10 Second Review

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE, an electric car, differs from the gas-powered E-class in several ways. It has an aerodynamic design and a spacious interior on a unique EV platform. The cabin is elegant and tech-filled. With three powertrain options, it offers up to 402 horsepower. Mercedes claims a range of over 793KMs, and a real-world test achieved 660KMS. However, the EQE lacks the character and driving excitement of traditional Mercedes models and relies heavily on touch controls. Still, its quiet cabin and smooth ride might appeal to some, despite departing from the brand’s usual characteristics.

The In-Depth Review

EV, Transmission, and Performance

Tested: 2023 EQE Mercedes! is it better than an E Class?

Electric vehicle battery technology has made significant strides in recent years, in contrast to early EVs that had limited city-range capabilities. The Mercedes EQE, however, breaks this pattern with an impressive range of up to 693 kilometers, making it one of the longest-range electric cars available. Both the EQE 300 and EQE 350 models offer the same range, although opting for larger wheels can slightly reduce it to 542 kilometers.

While Mercedes excels in providing extended range, its charging speed is not the fastest. The EQE can reach a maximum charging speed of 170kW. When using a compatible public charger, it’s possible to charge the electric Mercedes from 10% to 80% in about half an hour. However, if you use a standard 7.4kW home wallbox, it will take considerably longer to fully charge the EQE, estimated at over 14 hours due to its 89kWh usable capacity. It’s worth noting that the EQE supports 11kW AC charging, but many homes lack the three-phase electric needed for this faster charging speed.

The Mercedes EQE brings these features into the electric era, though with some limitations. While it offers an exceptionally quiet ride, likely due to its streamlined design, and an adaptive suspension system (with air springs in high-end models) that smooths out most road imperfections, it can feel somewhat overly soft and bouncy at times.

In terms of driving enjoyment, it falls short. While all models accelerate competently, only the top-tier AMG versions provide true excitement. The base EQE 300 performs adequately in reaching highway speeds, but its acceleration tapers off at higher speeds, making overtaking maneuvers less spirited than one might expect from a vehicle of this caliber. If budget permits, upgrading to the more powerful EQE AMG is recommended.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The EQE’s interior seamlessly blends a sophisticated design with premium materials, offering ample passenger space and storage compartments. A floating center console separates the front seats, which come with heated and ventilated cushions as standard. These seats can also be upgraded to include massage functions. Additionally, every EQE model comes equipped with a panoramic sunroof and customizable ambient interior lighting that gracefully illuminates the dashboard and doors, creating a unique visual atmosphere. Regrettably, while we admire the interior’s delightful aesthetics, we do wish the sedan had improved outward visibility. Furthermore, you have the option to enhance the cabin with features like a head-up display, four-zone climate control, and front doors that can be automatically opened and closed. Thanks to the EQE’s electric platform, which resembles a skateboard, it excels in terms of passenger comfort and offers competitive cargo space.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The EQE comes equipped with a 12.3-inch touchscreen as part of its standard infotainment system. This system incorporates a fingerprint scanner for personalized user profiles. Additionally, it includes a Burmester sound system and a wireless device charging feature as standard.
