On January 6, 2022, a Tesla Model S P85, which is the earliest performance version of the Model S, achieved an impressive milestone by covering 1,500,000 kilometers (932,256 miles). This remarkable achievement was accomplished by Hansjörg von Gemmingen-Hornberg, a well-known figure in the electric vehicle community, particularly for setting high-mileage records with Tesla cars.

Hansjörg’s previous milestones were reported on July 15, 2019 (900,000 km / 559,350 miles), November 28, 2019 (1,000,000 km / 621,504 miles), and October 15, 2020 (nearing 1,200,000 km / 745,805 miles). These consistent high-mileage achievements are primarily due to his use of the car as a taxi.
Before the Model S, Hansjörg drove a Tesla Roadster, which covered over 620,000 km (385,251 miles). To date, there have been no reports of higher mileage achieved by either the original Roadster or the Tesla Model S.
An important question is whether the car is still operating with its original battery and drive units. The original battery pack encountered an issue after 290,000 km (180,000 miles) and was replaced under warranty. During Tesla’s diagnosis of the issue, a temporary loaner battery was installed and used for approximately half a year or 150,000 km (93,000 miles). Subsequently, Tesla provided a new, permanent battery. There is no information available regarding any further battery replacements, so this could potentially be the first battery to reach 1 million km.
Regarding the drive units, the Tesla Model S P85 is a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Early Tesla models faced challenges related to high power and torque, resulting in several motor replacements. By the time the car reached 680,000 km, three drive units had been replaced, with the fourth unit remaining in operation until it reached 1,000,000 km. Unfortunately, there is no available information regarding any events or replacements beyond that point.
