The In-Depth Review

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Tested: 2023 RAM TRX: The Hellcat Truck!

Hidden within the TRX’s prominent fenders and beneath its scooped hood is a supercharged Hemi 6.2-liter V-8, commonly referred to as the Hellcat engine. This particular variant generates 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, distributing power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The TRX accelerates to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, completing the quarter-mile in 12.3 seconds at 110 mph, making it the fastest pickup we’ve ever tested. Despite its substantial weight and large size, the Hellcat-powered Ram exhibits surprising refinement and ease of handling on paved roads. Yet, its supercharged V-8 is ready to produce thrilling sounds through its exhaust pipes. Naturally, the TRX is designed for off-road adventures, featuring a reinforced steel frame and a robust suspension with over 13 inches of travel.

It rides on massive 35-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 18-inch wheels, contributing to the truck’s 11.8 inches of ground clearance. Ram claims the half-ton Hellcat can ford up to 32 inches of water. Every TRX includes substantial underbody plating for protection, Bilstein remote-reservoir dampers, an electronic-locking rear differential, and substantial 15.0-inch front brakes.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Ram has revolutionized expectations for truck interiors in its recent half-ton pickups, providing a blend of high-quality materials and effective insulation from external noise. This commitment to luxury and sophistication extends to the TRX model, exclusively available as a crew cab with a short cargo bed.

The base model mirrors the Ram 1500 Rebel’s cloth upholstery and standard features. However, opting for the TR1 and TR2 packages elevates the cabin’s appearance and feel, introducing leather-covered surfaces, along with a combination of microsuede and carbon-fiber accents. The TRX’s steering wheel is flat-bottomed and equipped with noticeable paddle shifters, complemented by a floor shifter on the center console. Premium options for the TRX include a digital rearview mirror, a head-up display, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Centered on the dashboard in every TRX is a 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, positioned vertically. This system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and integrated navigation. The touchscreen can be divided into distinct menus, allowing multiple applications to be open simultaneously.

Additionally, it incorporates physical knobs and buttons on the screen’s surrounding bezel for more user-friendly controls. Unfortunately, our long-term TRX experienced frequent blackouts with its large 12.0-inch center touchscreen, a problem not encountered with the company’s Uconnect systems featuring smaller screens. The truck also offers an optional robust 900-watt, 19-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system.

“It’s as quick as a supercar and handles like it’s half the weight.”
